What Does It Take to Create a Viral Facebook Game?

Social media games are definitely the latest craze with Facebook taking the lead by far. For this reason, many companies are hoping to capitalize upon the popularity of Facebook games by creating their own games that could gain viral attention.
So what is the key to creating a successful Facebook game?

Michael Thornton Wyman of Big Splash Games feels that to create an attractive and highly popular Facebook game, it needs to appeal to a targeted demographic so that it can get noticed right away.

Other successful keys include:

1. A Unique Concept: Look for something that has not been done before.

2. Competition: There is nothing more addicting than playing with friends, making Facebook games all the more popular.

3. Gifting: Yet another viral aspect of Facebook games is the ability to gift, share, and interact with friends so that the game has a chain effect in popularity.

4. Hooks: Aspects of the game need to draw in players so that they are enticed to return again and again, instead of playing once and giving up.

Facebook is, of course, the best example of this since you can find a number of specific games that fit these criteria within each genre. The important thing to remember as a creator of a social media game is that it must bring new and unique ideas to the table and also have key elements of friendly interaction and competition so that players will want to continue to play and share with their friends. That is certainly food for thought when it comes to creating a social media game that will set you apart from your competition, especially on Facebook.

I think they’ve hit the nail on the head. The ones that have quests in the game you have to complete in order to advance really can do it, too. Especially if said quests require you to have the help of neighbors, in which case people try to talk their friends into signing up, which leads to more addiction… Rinse and repeat, lol.
