The New Goliath of Internet Communications

There are now over 500 million users active on Facebook.

OK, we’ll stipulate that Facebook has become sort of the “Goliath” of Internet communications.  But if Facebook is Goliath, then who is David?

Email, according to a recent survey.

The study was published by Prompt Communications, and it surveyed 300 Boston consumers about how they communicate with friends, family and associates in everyday life.  It revealed that Facebook has outpaced email as a primary means of communication, with 96% of respondents reporting they use Facebook to reach out, compared to 91% who rely on email.

That separation may not suggest a giant versus child sort of spread, but it does uncover further evidence that the social media wave is clearly at high tide.  And with users spending over 700 billion minutes per month interacting on Facebook, there’s an awful lot of opportunity for engaging potential customers and promoting brand awareness on the site.

Perhaps that’s why two-thirds of comScore’s top 100 US websites have integrated with Facebook.  One of those firms, Disney online, has become quite active with its Facebook integration, choosing to embrace the fact that there are over twice as many Facebook apps as there are iPhone apps.  Disney’s Facebook apps are sometimes self-developed, but like other Fortune 500 companies, it has also relied on professional applications development firms like Social Jitney (www.socialjitney.com).

With over 550,000 apps adorning some 900 million Facebook objects, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to implement applications that are truly original.  That’s where companies like Avenuesocial come in.

The potential for reaching customers on Facebook is nearly endless.  And with social media sites like Facebook continuing to create new milestones in the way we communicate with each other today, it’s probably time for David to shake hands with Goliath.

Because this time, he probably can’t be defeated.
